Project proposal on regulation of platform work accepted for NWA grant

Platform Work – and its Regulations (PlatWork-R) is an interdisciplinary project on regulation of platform work, initiated by Prof. Koen Frenken from Utrecht University. PlatWork-R has recently been accepted for a NWA grant andCivicIxD will play a part – in collaboration with the lectorate Responsible IT – in exploring public values based algorithmic governance. We will use a research through design trajectory to explore the development of ‘platform plug-ins’. These are small bits of software that can be integrated into platforms such as  Uber, Deliveroo, Helpling and so on, to automatically regulate worker’s rights and other public values, for instance, safety concerns. This is not an uncontroversial approach as it would take governments to ex ante regulate particular sectors, using algorithms that are difficult to negotiate once they are in place. This is, among others, the type of discussion that we aim to stimulate during our contributions to this project.
