23 June | Closing Event Bewoners-in-the-loop, samen beslissen over AI in de stad

Cameras, sensors, and algorithms are everywhere in today’s cities. Useful, but they also raise questions about privacy, transparency, and democratic oversight. How can we deploy technology in public space responsibly? How do residents get a real voice in that process? And how do we move from “explaining” to having a genuine conversation?

On Tuesday, 23 June, researchers Mike de Kreek and Tessa Steenkamp will share the key lessons from the handbook ‘Bewoners-in-the-loop, samen beslissen over AI in de stad’. The handbook is the result of four years of research within Human Values for Smarter Cities and includes 50 concrete ideas, experiments, and methods to make technology in public space discussable with residents.

The core message: include public values from the very first idea, and keep testing and adjusting during both design and use—by starting (and continuing) the conversation with city residents. After this evening, you’ll leave with relatable examples and practical takeaways to start that conversation and keep it going.
