Martijn de Waal co-writes essay for the book “Eyes of the City” – a follow-up of the Bi-City Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture

CivicIxD Lector Martijn de Waal, together with Lector Frank Suurenbroek, has co-written an essay titled From the city as service to the city as a license for the book Eyes of the City.

Following up on the eponymous exhibition at the Bi-City Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture 2019, the book Eyes of the City examines the relationships between cities and digital technologies across various disciplines. As the Internet of Things dramatically expands its reach, touching upon critical issues including individual anonymity, data ownership, and design by proxy, how can designers, architects, and urban stakeholders see eye to eye with our artificial counterparts?

THE SHENZHEN BI-CITY BIENNIAL OF URBANISM/ARCHITECTURE was founded in 2005 and is dedicated to the exploration of urban space in all its facets. Alternating between the cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and with an ever-changing team of curators, it is a focal point for contemporary and future architecture.
