Civic IxD at ACM CHI Conference 2025

We are proud to share that Civic IxD will be contributing with two paper presentations at the upcoming ACM CHI Conference, taking place in Yokohama, Japan, from April 26 – May 1. See the paper descriptions below:

What Comes After Noticing?: Reflections on Noticing Solar Energy and What Came Next
Angella Mackey will present work developed in collaboration with Martijn de WaalDavid NG McCallum, and Oscar Tomico, the paper was part of the Designing with the Sun project and explores the role of “noticing” in designing with more-than-human perspectives. Through autoethnographic studies, the paper reflects on the transformative potential of noticing solar energy and the challenges of sustaining such awareness in design practice. This paper has been recognized as one of the Best Paper Award winners at the CHI 2025!

The Potential of Quadratic Voting for Cohousing Communities
Tara Karpinski (Caradt) presents a case study developed with Michel Van Dartel (Caradt) as part of the Charging the Commons project. It explores ‘be-commoning’ as establishing a resource community or urban commons. In particular, from a situated design perspective, we developed a quadratic voting tool that could assist cohousing communities in their process of value exploration and decision-making towards the design of their building and its shared resources.
