Charging the Commons Roundtable #2 | Deciding together: how a commons can make choices

Wednesday, Jan 31st, 2024 | 20:00 CET | Pakhuis de Zwijger & Live-Streamed | Free Admission

Join us on January 31st at Pakhuis de Zwijger or online, for the second episode of the roundtable series ‘Charging the Commons’. This session will explore a challenge faced by emerging commons communities: deciding on a means to make decisions together. How to choose a means of collective decision-making that reflects the community’s values, as well as the broader principles of the commons? Which procedures and tools are out there? What are the benefits (and drawbacks) of different decentralized methods like holacracy and quadratic voting? How are communities figuring out which ones suit them best and rolling them out in practical situations?

For this roundtable conversation, we invited members of two co-housing initiatives, the Community Land Trust H-buurt and De Warren, as well as researchers and community-building professionals to explore different perspectives on this challenge. Together, let’s take a closer look at the affordances of different ways of making collective decisions.

Speakers:

Tara Karpinski, Researcher at Caradt, Avans Homeschool

Marjolein Smeele, Commons Developer at Common City

Rosamel Abeka, Community Builder at CLT H-Buurt

Stefan Hennis, Procescoördinator en interim bestuur at Wooncoöperatie De Warren
