Martijn de Waal joins DocLab Showcase; Tech vs Art vs Reality, at SXSW2025

Last week at SXSW2025, Martijn de Waal joined Tamara Shogaolu and Caspar Sonnen on the ๐——๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ: ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐˜ƒ๐˜€ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐˜ƒ๐˜€ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† panel, organized by International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

The discussion explored two main questions:

– How can tech art surprise and connect us to physical reality, instead of just feeding us endless algorithmic distractions?

– How can radical immersive and interactive experiences reach audiences and grow into new artforms?

During the panel, IDFA DocLab presented the findings of its R&D program in collaboration with MIT and XR artists all over the world.

Martijn also reflected on SXSW2025 in his latest blog post: Technologie, design en de democratie: van transacties naar relaties, exploring how technology can foster deeper democratic relationships. Enjoy the read here.
