Design your own Civic Social Media platform

Design your own Civic Social Media platform

Would you like to start designing responsible, safe, and sovereign social media yourself? Download our toolkit below! The Designing for Civic Social Media toolkit contains 55 cards, composed of community archetypes, design principles, and dimensions for civic social media, which can help you in the design of digital platforms based on public values.

The toolkit includes three activities: understanding, designing, and evaluating. Choose an archetype, discuss the design choices, and translate these into concrete design decisions for your community. The activities can be used separately, but also build on each other as a design process. The activities can be carried out by individual designers, public organizations, or by the community itself. The accompanying questions can serve as reflection questions, discussion starters, or input for brainstorming sessions during a workshop.

Enough talk, get your hands dirty and start designing!

The toolkit is the result of a collaboration between the Civic Interaction Design research group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, PubHubs, PublicSpaces, the City of Amsterdam, Radboud University and Utrecht University, with financial support from the SIDN Fund. It was created with input from representatives of various public organisations.
