How can sensing solar energy change relationships to energy, leading to changes in energy practices that are experienced in positive ways?

The energy transition requires not only new technologies, but also changes in behaviour. In this new research project, the CivicIxD research group explores how design can help reshape our relationship with solar energy. As energy largely remains abstract—hidden in cables, apps and euros—it is difficult for people to engage consciously with their energy use. This is especially challenging now that citizens are being asked to use less energy, while also using it more intelligently.

Together with innovative SME partners in solar design, the research group explores the idea of “sensing energy”: how can solar energy be experienced more directly in the home or workplace, for example through sound, light or touch? By testing prototypes in everyday environments, CivicIxD investigates how such sensory experiences can lead to more positive and achievable changes in energy practices. The project builds design knowledge for a new, human-centred approach to the energy transition.
